Do Guitar Pickups Wear Out or Lose Their Magnetism Over Time?

This is one of the questions I get most often when someone brings in an older guitar, or is nervous about buying one: “Are the pickups going to be weak? Do they wear out? Do the magnets die?” The short answer is the reassuring one. A pickup is one of the most durable parts of an electric guitar. It has no moving parts, nothing spins, nothing rubs, and under normal use it will happily outlive you. The magnet losing its power over a human lifetime is essentially a non-issue.

But “essentially never” is not the same as “never,” and pickups do occasionally go bad — just not for the reason most people expect. After hundreds of used instruments across the bench, here’s what I actually see fail, what I don’t, and how much any of it should factor into what you pay.

What’s actually inside a pickup (and why it lasts)

Strip a passive pickup down and there isn’t much to it: a magnet, a set of pole pieces, and a coil of extremely fine copper wire — thousands of turns of it — wound around a bobbin, with two thin lead wires soldered on to carry the signal out. That’s the whole machine. There’s no capacitor to dry out, no belt to stretch, no bearing to wear. Electrically, it’s about as simple as a device gets, which is exactly why a 1959 pickup can still sound like a 1959 pickup.

Do the magnets lose their magnetism?

Technically, yes. Practically, no — not on any timescale you’ll ever care about. A properly charged Alnico magnet (the aluminum-nickel-cobalt alloy under most vintage-style pickups) loses only a fraction of a percent of its strength per century just sitting there. Estimates vary a little from source to source, but they all land in the same place: negligible. Your pickups will not go noticeably weak from age alone in fifty, sixty, seventy years.

The catch is that Alnico has relatively low coercivity, which is a fancy way of saying it’s comparatively easy to demagnetize on purpose. Slap a strong neodymium magnet up against it, hold a chunk of steel to it, or bang the guitar hard enough and you can knock a real chunk of the charge out — some tests show 20–30% is possible in the worst cases. That’s an event, not a slow fade. A dropped guitar or a curious kid with a rare-earth magnet from a hard drive can do more damage in a second than a half-century in the case. Ceramic (ferrite) magnets, common in hotter and budget pickups, are even more stubborn and harder to knock down.

And the old myth about leaning your guitar against your amp draining the pickups? Forget it. The stray field from a combo amp is nowhere near strong enough to touch your magnets. Lean away.

So what actually kills a pickup?

When a pickup truly dies — goes silent, or drops to a fraction of its output — it’s almost always one of three things, and none of them is “the magnet wore out.”

1. A broken lead-out wire or cold solder joint

This is the number one cause of a genuinely dead pickup, and it’s the first thing I check. The coil is wound from wire about as thick as a human hair, and where that hair-thin wire is soldered to the cloth-covered lead that runs to your switch, it’s fragile. A knock, a botched repair, decades of vibration, or a sloppy factory joint can break that connection. The good news: often it’s a repair, not a replacement. A competent tech can sometimes re-terminate the lead and bring a “dead” pickup back to life.

2. Corrosion — usually starting at the pole pieces

Your hands are salty and acidic, and the pole pieces sit right under the strings taking the brunt of it. On a used guitar the pole screws and slugs are the first place you’ll see rust or green gunk. Most of the time that’s purely cosmetic and the pickup sounds fine. But if a guitar has spent decades in a damp basement or been played hard by someone with corrosive sweat, rust can eventually creep into the coil itself and break a winding. That’s rare, and it typically takes four or five decades of neglect to get there.

3. Moisture shorting the coil

Salt-laden moisture that works its way into the windings can short between turns, which drops the pickup’s output and makes it sound dull and lifeless, or kills it outright. Single coils, with their windings more exposed than a wax-potted, cover-clad humbucker, are a little more vulnerable here — but again, this is a decades-and-neglect problem, not a “my five-year-old Strat is doomed” problem.

The honest part: do vintage pickups sound better because they’ve “aged”?

Here’s where players genuinely disagree, so I’ll give you my take and let you weigh it. There’s a romantic idea that pickups “open up” or “break in” over years and that a slightly weakened magnet gives old pickups their warm, sweet voice. I’m skeptical, and the physics is skeptical too. A pickup has nothing to break in — the wire and magnet don’t limber up like a speaker cone or a guitar top. If a magnet has lost meaningful charge, the honest result is usually less output and a duller top end, not more magic.

So why do so many old pickups sound so good? Mostly because the good ones were built well to begin with: the magnet grade, how the coil was wound, how much wire went on the bobbin, the cover material. When two pickups from the same era sound different, it’s almost always how they were made — not how they aged.

What this means when you’re buying used

Don’t let “are the pickups worn out?” scare you off a good used guitar. On the vast majority of instruments we take in, the original pickups are perfectly healthy and will stay that way. When you inspect one, plug in and listen to each pickup in each switch position — you’re listening for one that’s silent, weirdly quiet, or muffled next to its neighbor. Eyeball the pole pieces for heavy rust, and wiggle the cable and switch while it’s plugged in to catch a crackle that points to wiring rather than the pickup itself. Surface rust on the screws is a cleaning job and a bargaining chip, not a dealbreaker. A truly dead pickup is often a fixable solder joint, and worst case a replacement is a bolt-in afternoon.

FAQ

How long do guitar pickups last?

Effectively a lifetime. With no moving parts and a magnet that barely fades over a century, a well-made pickup that isn’t abused or soaked will outlast the player. Most “dead” pickups failed at a solder joint or from corrosion, not from age.

Can a dropped guitar demagnetize the pickups?

A hard enough impact can knock some charge out of an Alnico magnet, because Alnico is relatively easy to demagnetize. It’s uncommon, but it’s far more likely than the magnet simply fading on its own. A strong external magnet held to the pickups can do the same thing.

Do old pickups sound weaker?

Not usually, and rarely because of the magnet. If an old pickup sounds weak or dull, suspect a partial short in the coil from moisture, a corroded connection, or a wiring problem — not natural aging.

Should I replace the pickups in a used guitar I just bought?

Only if you don’t like how they sound. There’s no maintenance reason to swap healthy pickups. Play the guitar first; a good setup and a pickup-height adjustment change the sound more than most people expect, and cost nothing.
