Can You Actually Intonate a Wraparound Bridge?

Short version: yes, but only up to a point, and how close you get depends entirely on which bar is sitting on your studs. If you have a plain wraparound bar, you can set the overall length and tilt and that is it. If you have a compensated wraparound, you get closer, close enough that most players stop worrying about it. What none of them will do is let you dial in every string independently the way a tune-o-matic does. That is the honest trade you make when you buy a Les Paul Junior, a Special, an SG Special, or a Melody Maker.

I have had a lot of these across the bench, and the question comes up almost every time someone falls for a single-P-90 slab, plugs in, and hears the B string wander. Here is what is actually happening and what you can do about it.

What a wraparound bridge actually is

A wraparound is a single piece of metal that does two jobs at once: it is the bridge and the tailpiece. The strings anchor at the back, come up and over the top of the bar, and head to the nut. It mounts on two threaded studs, and that is the whole system. No separate stopbar, no six little saddles. It is about as simple as a bridge gets, which is exactly why Gibson has used it on stripped-down models for seventy-plus years.

There are two families you will run into. The first is the plain bar, sometimes called a stud or wrapover bar, with a single straight edge for all six strings to break over. The second is the compensated wraparound, often nicknamed the "lightning bar," which has a staggered or wavy ridge cast into the top so each string breaks over a slightly different spot. Gibson started using compensated wraparounds back in the 1960s specifically because the plain bar was causing intonation complaints. That history matters, because it tells you the plain bar was never really good enough on its own.

Why a plain bar fights you

Intonation is just string length. A fretted note plays sharp or flat depending on whether the speaking length of the string is a hair too short or too long for its gauge and tension. Wound strings and plain strings need noticeably different amounts of that extra length, which is why a properly intonated bridge has the saddles sitting in a staggered, zig-zag pattern rather than a straight line.

A plain wraparound bar gives every string the same break point on a straight edge. You can slide and tilt the entire bar to split the difference, and a patient setup will get your outer E strings reasonably close. But the B string almost always ends up the odd one out, because a plain B needs more compensation than its neighbors and the bar simply cannot give it any more than the others. That is the wandering you hear up around the 12th fret.

How far a compensated wraparound gets you

A good compensated bar solves most of the problem. The cast-in steps push the wound strings and the plain B toward their correct lengths, so instead of one string being obviously off, you get all six landing in the "close enough that nobody notices in a mix" zone. For a lot of players that is the end of the story, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. If you play a Junior for its snarl and its simplicity, a well-set compensated wraparound will keep you in tune across the neck for rock, blues, and punk all day long.

The catch is the word "cast-in." Those compensation steps are fixed. If your particular string gauge or your setup wants the D string a millimeter longer, you cannot give it that on its own. You are stuck with wherever the factory put the step. Most stock compensated bars are cut for a standard set with a plain third, so if you run a wound G or an unusual gauge, the compensation can actually work against you.

The two studs are your only real adjustment

Here is the part people miss. On a wraparound, your intonation tool is the pair of studs, not the bridge itself. Loosen the strings, and you can raise or lower each stud to change action, and you can move the bar forward or back to set overall length. Many modern compensated bars also have small set screws at the studs that let you lock the tilt once you like it. To dial it in, I set the two outer E strings first using a tuner, checking the open note against the fretted note at the 12th, then let the compensation handle the middle four. You are effectively intonating the whole guitar with two adjustments instead of six.

That is genuinely all the adjustment you have. If you have chased the studs back and forth and a string still will not behave, the bar is the limiting factor, not your technique.

When it is worth swapping the bridge

If the stock bar will not get you there, the aftermarket has spent decades on this exact problem. In rough order of how precisely they intonate, based on what I have fitted and what players consistently report: two-piece designs like the Faber Tone Bar tend to intonate the tightest with most string sets because the saddle section is separate, though they are not period-correct. The Music City "Saavy" and the MojoAxe are well regarded for getting very close while keeping a traditional look, with the MojoAxe raised under the plain strings to give them room. The Pigtail is a popular, well-made adjustable option, but its compensation is the least aggressive of the bunch.

One practical warning before you order anything: stud spacing matters. Vintage and reissue Gibsons can use different post spacing than modern ones, and some old models have the studs canted or offset. Measure your post spacing, or just tell us your exact model and year and we will point you at the right part. A bridge that does not match your studs is not going to intonate anything.

What I would actually do

If you are shopping for a used Junior, Special, SG, or Melody Maker, do not let the wraparound scare you off. Check what bar is on it. A plain bar is a red flag only if the seller swears it intonates perfectly, because it will not. A compensated bar is what you want to see, and if the guitar is otherwise right, buy it and set it up properly. If you are already gigging one and the B string bugs you, spend twenty minutes with the studs and a tuner before you spend a dime, because a real setup fixes more of these than a new bridge does. Save the bridge swap for when you have genuinely hit the wall.

Simplicity is the whole point of these guitars. The wraparound is part of that character, not a defect to be engineered out. You just have to know what it can and cannot do before you hand over your money. FAQ

Can you perfectly intonate a wraparound bridge?
Not perfectly, no. A compensated wraparound gets all six strings close, and a plain bar gets your outer strings close, but neither offers the per-string precision of a tune-o-matic. For most playing situations a well-set compensated bar is close enough that you will not hear the difference in a band.

Is a compensated wraparound better than a plain one?
For intonation, clearly yes, which is why Gibson introduced them in the first place. Some players prefer the look or the feel of a plain bar and argue it has a touch more sustain, but that sustain claim is debated and hard to pin down. If tuning accuracy is your priority, go compensated.

Do I need to replace my wraparound to fix bad intonation?
Usually not first. Nine times out of ten a careful setup, resetting overall bar position and tilt against a tuner, gets a compensated bar where it needs to be. Only consider an aftermarket bridge like a Faber, MojoAxe, or Music City if you have done a proper setup and a string still refuses to intonate.

Which strings give a wraparound the most trouble?
The plain B is the usual culprit, followed by the G if you run a wound third. Those are the strings that need the most individual compensation, and a fixed bar has the hardest time serving them.
