gibson-les-paul-signature-2014-caribbean-blue
Gibson Les Paul Signature 2014 - Caribbean Blue

This 2014 Gibson Les Paul Signature 120th Anniversary in Caribbean Blue is one of those Les Pauls that looks far better in person than the model name really prepares you for. The color is a deep turquoise/blue-green over a figured maple top, and depending on the angle you get a mix of flame, mineral streaking and darker grain running through it. It gives the guitar a ton of character without looking overly polished or artificial. The Caribbean Blue finish is one of the colors Gibson offered specifically on this model, and it works especially well on this top. There is plenty of figure underneath the blue, along with a lot of natural character in the maple that gives it a much more interesting look than a flat solid-color Les Paul.

The 120th Anniversary inlay at the 12th fret is a nice little reminder of exactly what era this guitar came from, but what stood out to me much more was how good it actually feels to play. This example still has its original pickups and the complete electronics test passed inspection. They are very punchy, with a lot of immediate attack and output. The neck pickup stays thick and full without getting muddy, while the bridge has plenty of bite and definition when you lean into it. The neck is slick and relatively slim in the hands, with more of that fast ’60s-style feel than a big rounded vintage neck. The frets are level, smooth and in excellent shape, and the current setup plays with genuinely low action. This is one of those Les Pauls where the neck immediately feels quick.

Originally, this model came with the controversial Min-ETune system, which has been replaced with Gibson Grover tuners.

The pickups are also a lot of fun. They have a noticeably punchy response with plenty of attack, but there’s still the thickness and low-mid push you expect from a Les Paul. The electronics passed a complete test with no issues, and the guitar reacts really well to both cleaner playing and gain.

Condition-wise, I’m calling this one Excellent. The top is exceptionally clean and has only one small finish ding that is so light it doesn't shows up in photographs and hard to even notice in person. The backside is also remarkably clean for a 2014 guitar, with just one tiny ding that I photographed up close.

Beyond those two small spots, there really isn’t much to point out. The body, neck and backside all inspected extremely well, the fretboard is clean, and the frets show no meaningful wear. For a guitar that is now more than a decade old, it has clearly been treated very well.

The Caribbean Blue finish is really the centerpiece here. The figuring changes dramatically across the top, with some areas showing broader flame while others reveal more subtle grain and mineral character. Up close there’s a lot going on, but from across the room the color is what immediately grabs you. It’s definitely not a finish you see every day on a Les Paul.

The clear knobs, black uncovered pickups and black pickguard give it a much more modern look than a traditional burst, while the rosewood board, trapezoid inlays and cream binding still keep it unmistakably Les Paul. It ends up feeling like a really good mix of classic Gibson shape and something a little more unusual.

This is also a guitar I’d be perfectly happy buying as a player. The setup is already where I’d want it, the neck feels quick, the frets are slick, and the electronics all passed inspection. There’s nothing here that feels like it needs to be sorted out before you can actually enjoy it.

What stood out to me:

• Caribbean Blue figured maple top has a ton of natural movement
• 120th Anniversary fretboard inlay
• Punchy, responsive sound with plenty of attack
• Fast, slim-feeling neck
• Excellent fret and fretboard condition
• Effortless low-action setup
• Spot-on intonation
• 9.28 lbs on my scale
• Original Gibson hard case
• Includes the original inspection sheet

The photos shown are real photographs of this exact guitar.
