gibson-es-335-dot-1981-1985-natural
Gibson ES-335 Dot 1981 - 1985 - Natural

This 1981 Gibson ES-335 Dot is exactly the kind of vintage Gibson that reminds you why these older semi-hollows have such a reputation. It has that broken-in, resonant, open feel that you just do not get from a newer guitar right out of the box. For being over 40 years old, this one has been kept in seriously impressive condition, and it plays and sounds every bit as good as you would hope.

The Natural finish has aged beautifully. It has that warm golden look with the right amount of vintage character, and the figuring in the wood gives it a really classy, old-school ES-335 presence. It shows typical honest wear for its age, including light scratches, small dings, and finish marks here and there, but nothing major or distracting. Overall, it still presents extremely well and has a surprising amount of thick glossy finish left on both the body and neck.

This one is all original where it really matters, including the original pickups, which sound fantastic. They have that clear, warm, airy semi-hollow tone with plenty of depth and response. It can get smooth and rounded, but still has enough bite and articulation when you dig in. There is a reason these older ES-style Gibsons are so loved — they have a way of sounding alive that is hard to fake.

Playability is also a huge highlight. The guitar has had a recent setup and fresh strings, and it plays beautifully up and down the neck. The neck is comfortable, the intonation is spot on, and the frets are honestly in amazing shape for its age. That was one of the first things that stood out to me. It really feels like this guitar spent a lot of its life safely tucked away rather than being heavily gigged.

The tuners have been changed to Gibson/Kluson-style tuners, which give the guitar a much more period-correct vintage look while also offering solid tuning stability. The original Grover tuners are included as well, so you have them with the guitar.

Condition is very good to excellent overall depending how strictly you grade vintage instruments. For a 1981 guitar, it is extremely well kept. There is some play wear on the neck, light scratches and small dings in the finish, and normal signs of age throughout, all consistent with a well-preserved vintage Gibson. Nothing here affects the sound or playability.

Weight is 8.39 lbs on my scale.

Includes the original hard shell case.

This is one of those guitars that will likely double in value over the next decade.
